Nighthawks Unable To Finish The Jam, Lose 101-99 To Jacksonville

The Maryland Nighthawks dropped their fourth consecutive game, this time losing to the Jacksonville Jam Friday evening 101-99, dropping them to a 0-4 record to start the season.

The Jam took control of the game right from the start, scoring the games first seven points and built an early 16-4 lead. The Nighthawks responded as Lonnie Herrell and Warren Jefferson by connecting on two back-to-back three pointers, cutting the Jacksonville lead in half.

The Jam however would finish the opening period on a 16-9 and headed into the second quarter with a 32-19 advantage.

The Jam extended their lead up to 48-32 after Jacksonville guard Antonio Lawrence (17 points) hit a technical free throw assessed on David Bailey with 4:24 remaining in the second period. Yet, the Nighthawks would not go away and finished the half on a 22-7 run, cutting the deficit to 55-54 at the half.

The Nighthawks carried their momentum with them into the second half as they began the quarter with an 11-5 run, taking a 65-59 lead with 8:55 remaining in the period. The Nighthawks extended their lead to as many as nine after Lonnie Herrell (nine points in the period) hit a 26-foot three-pointer with eight seconds remaining, giving the Nighthawks an 82-73 lead heading into the final period.

The Nighthawks put themselves in a good position, building a 92-82 lead with 6:05 remaining in the game, but as been the story of this young season, the Nighthawks were unable to finish the game strong.

Jacksonville closed the game on 19-9 run earning them their second win of the season. Jacksonville forward Brian Greene (17 points) hit a lay-up with 1:49 remaining giving the Jam a 96-95 advantage, their first lead in the second half.

The Nighthawks responded as Lonnie Herrell hit an 8-foot jumper from the baseline and on the ensuing possession Warren Jefferson hit a lay-up putting the Nighthawks back up 99-96 with 56 seconds to go.

Jacksonville guard Terrence Woods (team high 19 points) made two free throws to put the Jam ahead 100-99 with 49 seconds left. Forward Chad Johnson then took a charge from Maryland's Warren Jefferson on the next possession to preserve the Jam's lead.

Nighthawks forward Lonnie Herrell had a game-high 24 points and also had six rebounds. Warren Jefferson had 20 points and Hugh "Baby Shaq" Jones chipped in with 19 points for the Nighthawks.

The Nighthawks next game is tomorrow night in Wilmington when they take on the league's best 4-0 Wilmington Sea Dawgs at 7:00pm at the Schwartz Center.
