Omaha Nighthawks News Release
OMAHA, Sept. 28 - With great sadness the Omaha Nighthawks announce the death of Greg Miller, who was serving as the team's director of player personnel this season. Miller, 57, of Grand Island, Neb., passed away Thursday morning at St. Francis Medical Center.
"Today we lost a dear friend of not only the Omaha Nighthawks, but the entire football community," said Nighthawks general manager Matt Boockmeier. "He was a dedicated scout, a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and he was passionate about both. But, above all else, he was a man of conviction and integrity. He was not only a colleague, but a great friend of mine for 20 years."
Prior to joining the Nighthawks staff, Miller spent 13 years scouting in the Great Plains area for the Denver Broncos. As a regional scout for National Football Scouting from 1994-97, he evaluated prospective NFL talent from colleges in nine upper-Midwest states.
"There are many players in professional football today who owe a small debt of gratitude to Greg Miller for his initial evaluation of them," Boockmeier said.
A native of Mitchell, S.D., Miller was a three-year starter and two-time all-conference pick at offensive tackle for South Dakota State University. Before joining NFS, Miller had a 16-year career with International Multifoods, where he ascended from a district sales coordinator to the director of operations for the entire west region.
Miller is survived by his wife, Jane, a registered nurse; daughter, Adrienne; two sons, Mike and Nolan; one granddaughter, Makenna; and two grandsons, Owen and Matthias.
"The football community, and specifically the scouting fraternity, lost a good scout, a good friend and an even better human being," Boockmeier said. "We send our condolences to his wife, Jane, and to his three children and three grandchildren. We dedicate this season to the memory of Greg Miller and his love of the game."
