Nighthawks hold on against Thunder

February 18, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Maryland NightHawks News Release

District Heights, MD. In a game that was earily similar to one played just 12 days ago, the Maryland Nighthawks held on to defeat the Carolina Thunder 120-116 at Run 'N Shoot Athletic Center. The Nighthawks were led by Lawrence Moten and Dennis Edwards who each scored 34 points.

Just like their last meeting, the Thunder overcame a 19 point second half deficit in the third period to tie the game with less than one minute to play. This time though the Nighthawks finished strong when Edwards made an easy lay-up with 22 seconds left in the game after the Nighthawks broke the Carolina press. Carolina big man Marvin Dixon missed a short jumper with 8 seconds left on the ensuing trip down the floor. It was one of the few times Dixon did not convert as he led Carolina with 31 points and 9 rebounds. Nighthawk guard Brian Chase added 2 free throws to secure the victory.

"I was pleased with the way our front line played," explained head coach Twiggy Sanders, who in addition to the contributions of Moten and Edwards, also got a big lift from center Kevin Robinson who finished with 25 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks. Robinson has been hampered with a back injury the last 5 games. Altogether, the aforementioned front line finished with a combined 93 points and 25 rebounds.

With the victory, the Nighthawks improve their record to 14-9 and are inching closer to not only clinching a playoff berth, but also home court advantage for the first round game. The ABA uses a power ranking system that combines won/loss record, point differential and strength of schedule. The Nighthawks play again Monday, Feb 21st at 2PM at Run 'N Shoot Athletic Center in District Heights, Maryland.
