Omaha Nighthawks News Release
OMAHA, NE - Monday, March 28 - The Omaha Nighthawks held their second round of player tryouts on Saturday, March 26, in Coppell, Texas, as the search continues for talented players for the upcoming 2011 United Football League season.
Around 150 participants arrived at Buddy Echols Field near Dallas, Texas, aiming to impress Nighthawks head coach JOE MOGLIA and General Manager RICK MUELLER.
"We had more draft-eligible college players at this workout than we have ever had," said Mueller, noting that players who would usually expect to be signed by NFL teams as free agents are considering the UFL as a viable alternative. "Typically, we will have a dozen or so veteran players with five or six years of pro experience, but not at this one. That being said, from an overall talent level, this is one of the best tryouts I have seen in my three years in the UFL.
"The stadium and facility at Coppell High School was amazing. I cannot thank them enough for their help and hospitality. We had a great turnout in terms of the number of participants, and the weather conditions were ideal."
With two tryouts under their belt, the Nighthawks coaching staff is already gelling after just two weekends together.
"We are all becoming more familiar with how Coach Moglia would like this organization to operate, and that itself makes this fun and exciting," added Mueller. "Personally, I learn something in almost every conversation with him. It is awesome to have the opportunity to work with a guy like Joe. I can already sense he is going to have a tremendous positive impact on our players and really the entire organization."
The final open player tryouts will be closer to home at Bellevue West High School (1501 Thurston Avenue) in Bellevue, NE on Saturday, April 9. Registration for all prospects (except kickers and punters) is from 8:30 to 10 a.m. and the tryouts will now run at the new time of 10am to 12.30pm. Kickers and punters may register at 12pm with tryouts from 1pm to 3pm.
