NIFL Week One Preview

March 9, 2006 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL) News Release


Expansion rules and inner-state rivalries are on tap as the National Indoor Football League begins it's sixth season of play with 5 games slated to kick-off the debut weekend of March 9-11 th.

Two of the newest teams in the NIFL will run head to head on Thursday. The Greensboro Revolution, led by former NFL player Tito Wooden, travel to Florida to meet the Osceola Outlaws, with running backs Adreal Curry and Mike Stevenson ready to romp behind an offensive line averaging some 320lbs per man. The game will be played at the Silver Spurs Arena. Kick-Off at 7pm.

Rapid City 's Flying Aces will host the newly expanded Big Sky Thunder on Saturday, March 11 th. Big Sky Head Coach Eric Seller's squad of NIFL veterans and local talent will go up against a Rapid City team led by former Red Dog's running back Verna Owens who scored 31 touchdowns in 2003. Kick-Off at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center is on tap for 7pm.

The Beaumont Drillers and the Katy Copperheads will Texas Two-Step into NIFL 2006 when the teams meet on Saturday night at the Leonard E. Merrell Center. The Drillers are led by quarterback Akili Roberson. Former Lubbock Gunslingers coach Bryan Blake will have his Katy team ready to draw come 7:05pm Kick-Off.

Tennessee River Sharks Head Coach Chris Carter says Saturday's match-up with the Twin City Gators will be a chance for both teams to measure strengths and weakness in the NIFL "It should be interesting, they don't know much about us and we haven't had time to get a grip on what they're all about. It's two expansion teams, testing each o ther, sizing up the competition of the NIFL." Tennessee's advantage may be in having the game at their home venue, the Camp Jordan Arena. It's a 7pm Kick-Off.

And rounding out week one of the NIFL 2006 schedule will be an inner-state contest between the visiting West Palm Beach Phantoms and the host Lakeland Thunderbolts. Phantoms Head Coach Ray Berger will take his upstart team to the Lakeland Center to go up against a Thunderbolt team led by return starting quarterback Jeremy Martin. Saturday's Kick-off is scheduled for 7pm.
