Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners announce that Nick Duron has signed with the Seattle Mariners, becoming the first Miners player signed by a major league organization in the 2019 season and the 56th such player in the franchise's 13-year history.

Selected by the Miners in the 2019 Frontier League Draft after playing three seasons in the Boston Red Sox organization, Duron dominated the competition out of the Miners' bullpen this year, making 10 appearances with two wins, two saves and a 1.35 ERA. The hard-throwing right-hander from Salinas, California did not allow a run in his first nine appearances, and struck out 18 batters while walking only five (three non-intentionally) and allowing just one extra-base hit.

Duron is the third Miners player to be picked up by the Mariners in their history and third right-handed pitcher as well after Williams Perez (2018) and Adam Lopez (2015).

"This is a wonderful opportunity for Nick," Miners manager Mike Pinto said. "He has been fabulous for us and deserved this chance. He has dominated since he got here and has a wonderful future ahead. I am so glad we could provide a platform for yet another player to chase his dreams."

The Miners return to action on the road tonight at Lake Erie, with first pitch at 6:05 p.m. at Sprenger Stadium in Avon, Ohio. Chase Cunningham will pitch in the opener of the three-game weekend series.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the Frontier League's most-successful franchise since debuting in 2007, winning the 2012 Frontier League Championship as well as division titles in 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in their inaugural season.
