Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Newport Gulls, six-time champions of the New England Collegiate Baseball League, are now accepting applications to be the team's 2017 Broadcaster and Director of Media Relations.

In addition to broadcasting up to 50 games throughout the summer, the position entails managing a staff of media interns and crew members to produce what is widely considered the premier summer collegiate baseball broadcast and media operation in the country. While solid on-air broadcast skills are critical, applicants to the position must also demonstrate strong writing, editing, and social media skills in managing the team's day-to-day media operations from May through August.

Among the duties the Broadcaster and Director of Media Relations is responsible for include:

- Lead play-by-play broadcaster for 22 regular season home games, and color and play-by-play broadcaster for 22 away games, plus all playoff games and exhibitions, appearing on local access television, several New England radio stations, and streaming via paid video and free audio broadcasts on the NECBL Broadcast Network.

- Managing, training, and developing a staff of up to seven media interns, including a Team Publicist, Official Scorer, Social Media Coordinator, public relations interns, and broadcast operations interns.

- Under the direction of the Director of Broadcast Operations, working with existing staff and volunteers to produce high-quality, multi-camera video productions of all home games, including 30-minute pregame shows, 20-minute postgame shows, commercial spots, and other associated broadcast coverage, while working closely with and training field reporters and/or assistant broadcasters.

- In collaboration with the Team Publicist, writing/editing media releases, game recaps, and feature stories to promote the team, both for distribution and for content on social media and the team website.

- Managing and frequently updating the team's official website and social media accounts throughout the season, and directing and coordinating staff access, ensuring consistency and reach of messaging.

- Working with team marketing, public relations, and baseball operations staff to ensure cross-promotion and ultimate success of team events, promotions, sponsored nights, and special projects.

- Regular collaboration with official team photographers and videographers to publish content.

- Content development and copy editing of team marketing materials, including the annual team Media Guide, promotional materials, player biographies, and team card sets.

- Coordination of press coverage for games and events, and professionally answering all inquiries from local print, radio, and television media, as well as visiting team media and broadcasters.

- Additional related duties as may be delegated by the General Manager.

The position reports directly to the General Manager and Board of Directors, with additional supervision by and collaboration with the Director of Baseball Operations and Director of Broadcast Operations.

The Newport Gulls Broadcaster and Director of Media Relations position is unpaid, and is designed to provide significant capstone experience to a candidate seeking a career in baseball broadcasting and media relations. Housing is not provided; however, travel to all road games, and meals at all home and road games are covered. The successful candidate will be expected to balance and complete multiple simultaneous tasks on deadline with minimal supervision, while also managing and training a media support team to collectively achieve the organization's goals. As such, candidates with existing baseball and/or summer collegiate media experience - including college seniors and recent graduates - will receive strong consideration. Applicants should possess a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and desire to grow and learn in a challenging, fast-paced sports media and broadcast environment.

All applicants should contact Director of Baseball Operations and Media Relations Nick Lima via email at media@newportgulls.com with any questions, and should submit the following materials to apply for the 2017 Broadcaster and Director of Media Relations position:

- A cover letter.

- A complete resume, including any prior media, broadcast, and writing experience.

- Links to, or attachments of, at least three audio or video samples of previous baseball play-by-play work.

- Links to, or attachments of, at least three relevant writing samples.

The Newport Gulls, members of the 13-team New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL), are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded as the Rhode Island Gulls in 1998 in Cranston, R.I., before moving to Newport in 2001. In addition to recruiting, fielding, and developing a team of the nation's top collegiate baseball athletes and attracting 50,000 fans annually to Cardines Field, the predominantly volunteer organization strives to benefit the youth of Newport County via summer camps, reading programs, fundraisers, scholarships, and charitable donations - totaling over $1 million since 2001. The Gulls are six-time champions of the NECBL - the winningest franchise in league history - and were ranked as the overall No. 1 summer collegiate baseball team in the country by Perfect Game USA in 2012.
