Newport Gulls News Release
NEWPORT, R.I. - Newport (18-14) fell 5-1 to the Ocean State Waves (12-19) on People's Credit Union FANatic About Reading Night at Cardines Field. For the Waves, Peyton Deats picks up the win as Garrett Schmeltz is saddled with the loss for the Gulls.
Schmeltz struggled early on, walking the first three batters of the game and allowing a single to Xavier Vargas which scored the first run of the game. In the second his struggles continued as the Waves tacked on another run after Casey Dana was hit by a pitch which brought home a run. In the third inning, John Cristino launched a two-run home run to make it a 4-0 Waves lead.
The Gulls were scoreless until the seventh inning when Hudson Haskin crushed a solo homer to left to make it a 4-1 game. Haskin's home run was his second in the last five games and fourth of the year, tying Justyn-Henry Malloy for the most on the Gulls. Newport, however, couldn't tack on any more runs as they fell to the Waves 5-1. The loss to the Waves draws the Pell Bridge Series one game closer, now 3-2 with the Gulls still holding a game advantage over their in-state rivals.
Newport will have the day off on Thursday and will be back in action Friday as they take on the Vermont Mountaineers for American Heroes Night sponsored by Yalanis Wealth Management Group of Wells Fargo Advisors. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm.
