Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, N.J. - Newark native Burt Reynolds stole second, third and scored on an error, breaking a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning, leading the Newark Bears to a 5-2 victory over the New York Federals Saturday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

It was the third straight victory for the Bears, who climbed over the .500 mark for the first time this season at 5-4, while the Federals dropped to 1-8.

Hillsborough native Eric Eden (2-0) scattered 10 hits over six innings to earn his second win in as many starts. Once again, Eden gave the Bears a solid start, striking out two and walking just one, allowing just two earned runs. T.J. Hose pitched two strong scoreless innings of relief, striking out four and allowing just one hit. Anthony Pluta pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save.

It marked the second straight night that Reynolds had a hand in the Bears' victory, after driving in the winning run in walk-off fashion Friday night in the Bears' 8-7 win.

The Bears grabbed the early lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Danny Santiesteban reached on an error and came around to score on a long RBI triple from Burt Reynolds. It was the second straight run-scoring hit from Reynolds, who ended Friday night's game with a walk-off RBI single.

The Bears then added another run in the home third, when Paddy Matera reached on an error and eventually scored on an RBI single from Santiesteban, pushing the lead to 2-0.

The Federals tied the game at 2-2 with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Wilson Matos singled and moved to third on a double from Alex Bardeguez. Both runners then scored on a long double by Trevor Pippin. The Bears made a fine defensive play to keep the game tied, when Paddy Matera went home on a grounder to second, nailing Pippin at the plate.

The Bears manufactured the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth without the benefit of a hit. With one out, Reynolds walked and immediately stole second. With Todd Gossage at the plate, Reynolds broke to steal third and the throw from losing pitcher Jon Shepard sailed high and wide, enabling Reynolds to come home to score, giving the Bears a 3-2 lead.

The Bears added another run in the bottom of the seventh inning, when Brandon Watson and Matera had consecutive singles, were bunted to third by Jeff Toth and Watson scored on a fielder's choice by Santiesteban, his second RBI of the game, pushing the lead to 4-2.

The Bears scored another run in the bottom of the eighth, when Gossage doubled, moved to third on an infield out and scored on Kyle LaMotta's sacrifice fly.

Matos, Bardeguez and Andrew Barbaro all had two hits each for the Federals.

The Bears and Federals will continue their series Sunday at 1:05 p.m. and will complete the series with a Monday morning 11 a.m. contest at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
