Portland Lumberjax News Release
PORTLAND, January 12, 2008 - With forward Dan Dawson making his highly anticipated debut and the Portland LumberJax wearing the team's first ever third jersey, the Jax (0-1) fell 14-11 to the New York Titans (1-0) in front of 10,893 raucous fans at the Rose Garden Arena Saturday night.
From the beginning, it was all New York. The Titans were up 5-0 behind four power play goals before the Jax even had a chance to blink. Forward Derek Malawsky got the Jax on the board when the nine-year veteran scored with 1:53 left in the first quarter. That goal was made possible by a series of nice passes from Dawson and Ryan Powell.
Trailing 7-1, the Jax began the second quarter with a renewed vigor. Powell scored, then Malawsky, and finally Dawson scored to complete the 3-0 run for the Jax. All three goals were power play goals for the Jax. The Titans would add a late Mike McLellan goal to take an 8-4 lead into the break.
The third quarter featured another 3-0 run for the Jax as Dawson put in back-to-back goals to complete the hat trick. The run culminated with Malawsky's second goal of the game to move the Jax within one. However, New York scored the final three goals of the quarter to take an 11-7 lead into the final period of regulation.
The Jax continued the second half surge by scoring the first four goals of the period to tie the game at 11 with just over eight minutes to play. The deluge of scoring started with Malawsky's third goal of the game. Peter Jacobs then followed with his first National Lacrosse League goal, which was assisted by Dawson and Scott Stewart.
Dawson scored his record setting fourth goal of the game to trim the Titan lead to 11-10. Dawson's four goals and four assists were the most goals scored in a season opener for the Jax and the most overall points (8) in a season opener in team history. Powell continued the excitement as he tied the game at 11 with just over eight minutes left off an assist from Peter Morgan and Jacobs.
The scoring ended there for the Jax, however. New York rattled off the final three goals to complete the 14-11 victory. This was the first time the Jax lost a home opener.
