New York Empire News Release
NEW YORK - The New York Empire presented by Citi fell to the Orange County Breakers, 22-14, on Court 17 of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Thursday night. The Breakers, the reigning winners of the King Trophy given to the World TeamTennis presented by GEICO champions, improve to 4-5 on the season while the Empire remain winless.
With the support of an energetic and noisy home crowd on Court 17, the Empire got off to a dream start when Tatjana Maria utilized her deadly serve to register two aces on the way to a 5-2 opening set win over Yanina Wickmayer, last season's WTT Female Rookie of the Year. The momentum, however, did not carry over into the second set of men's doubles as the Breakers' duo of Marcelo Demoliner and Mackenzie McDonald came out on top in a set that featured several entertaining exchanges at the net. The Breakers' 5-2 set win over Mardy Fish and Neal Skupski evened the score at seven.
In Mardy Fish's last night of World TeamTennis action this season, the former American No. 1 fell to the WTT rookie McDonald, 5-2. The Breakers then extended their lead in the fourth set of women's doubles as Wickmayer and Andreja Klepac breezed past Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez and Tatjana Maria, 5-2. The Breakers closed out the match with a 5-3 win in mixed doubles, securing the 22-14 win on the night.
