A sure sign that baseball is back after a long winter is the sound of kids laughing and playing on a beautiful spring night at Clipper Magazine Stadium. For the upcoming 2013 season, families coming to the ballpark will find a brand new playground for kids 12 and under to explore. A host of other improvements totaling more than a quarter of a million dollars was made in the busy off-season.

Starting last October, the Barnstormers and the Lancaster County Redevelopment Authority put in motion a range of projects that will be completed prior to the Barnstormers' April 18th home opener against the Camden Riversharks.

The biggest project tackled is the new playground area, a major destination within the stadium for the Barnstormers' youngest fans. Located off the third base line, the playground will have all new, state of the art equipment with zones appropriate for children 2-5 years of age and 5-12 years of age. The new playground work is extensive, including the excavation of existing soil from the playground site, pouring of a foam-based fall protection material and the installation of the new play equipment. Use of the playground equipment will remain FREE for children attending games.

A second project involved the replacement of the entire wooden picnic deck, home of the Hess's BBQ Picnic Area, off the first base side. The wooden deck, ramp and stairs have been replaced with a durable composite material.

Other work that will be wrapped up by mid-April includes the replacement of the right field wall, new picnic tents, landscaping behind the batter's eye and the installation of computerized irrigation controls for the grass playing surface.

"Clipper Magazine Stadium is a gem, attracting residents from all over the County and visitors to Lancaster," noted Lisa Riggs, president of the Barnstormers. "From the day it opened, it's been a top priority of ours to keep this facility well maintained to meet our obligation to the community and to ensure that our fans have a terrific experience. Our focus this off-season was on some of the most heavily utilized amenities in the park - the playground and our picnic area. We appreciate the help and support of Clipper Magazine Stadium's owner, the Lancaster County Redevelopment Authority, and our corporate sponsors who helped make the improvements possible."

The Lancaster Barnstormers are entering their ninth season as a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Home games are played at Clipper Magazine Stadium in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Please call 717.509.HITS (4487) or visit LancasterBarnstormers.com for more information.
