New Orleans VooDoo News Release
NEW ORLEANS (March 15, 2011) - The New Orleans VooDoo and Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine joined forces, reaching a partnership for the 2011 season to provide all sports medicine needs for the VooDoo, announced both organizations on Thursday afternoon.
Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine is committed to providing the highest quality of individualized sports health care and to assist in the prevention of athletic injuries and disorders. The Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine is the site of choice for athletes at all levels based upon approach, attention, and dedication to sports health care.
TISM has assigned Patrick Maloney as the VooDoo's athletic trainer for the 2011 season, while also granting the club Dr. Gregory S. Stewart as the team's primary physician. Also, Dr. Felix Savoie and Dr. Michael O'Brien will assist with TISM's commitment to the VooDoo, making the sports medicine team a major asset to the 2011 season.
Maloney received his Bachelor's degree in exercise and nutritional sciences with an emphasis in Athletic Training from San Diego State University in 2004. He continued on to attain his Master's degree in Kinesiology from California State University, Northridge in 2006. Patrick was previously with Tulane University Athletics where he worked with track and field and football before joining the Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine in 2009. He specialized in proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation and manual resistive exercise.
Dr. Stewart, who is known nationwide for his expertise in sports medicine and sports related injuries, also joins the VooDoo. Dr. Stewart also brings arena football experience to the VooDoo, having worked with the New Orleans Night during the team's short tenure in the city.
Dr. Stewart graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch and is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and has been involved in various aspects of sports medicine for more than thirty five years. He is an Associate Professor of Orthopedics at the Tulane University School of Medicine and is Chief of the Section of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is a member of the Louisiana Athletic Trainer's Association Hall of Fame, is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, and currently serves as the Director of Sports Medicine for the Tulane University Department of Athletics.
"I cannot express enough how grateful we are as an organization to have reached a great partnership with not only a well-respected sports medicine organization, but to have classy and professional personnel in Patrick Maloney and Dr. Stewart to assist our athletes. This is a win-win situation, and it makes sense," said Dan Newman, owner of the New Orleans VooDoo.
"There is no doubt that if it had not been for Tulane, Patrick Maloney and Dr. Stewart, I really don't think that our wide receiver Carlese Franklin would have bounced back from his foot injury the way he did. But he did way ahead of schedule, making me a firm believer in Patrick Maloney's and Dr. Stewart's expertise in sports medicine," added Newman.
VooDoo wide receiver Carlese Franklin sustained an injury (foot) in late February, and the setback required surgery. Franklin was listed as out until this afternoon when he was taken off the physically unable to perform list - approximately two weeks ahead of schedule. Dr. O'Brien performed the surgery.
"Here at the Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine, we take care of athletes of every level. We are very happy to be back working with arena football and providing medical coverage to the New Orleans Voodoo," said Dr. Stewart about the partnership.
All the services offered at the Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine are provided in partnership with the Tulane University Medical Group and incorporate the educational and research programs of the Tulane University Medical School.
