New Name and Logo for Triple-A Baseball's Championship Game in Oklahoma City
Published on August 7, 2009 under International League (IL1) News Release
Triple-A Baseball announced today that the annual one-game, winner-take-all clash between the champions of the International and Pacific Coast Leagues in Oklahoma City will be known as the Triple-A Baseball National Championship Game. The event formerly known as the Bricktown Showdown has become the pinnacle moment of the Triple-A Baseball season since its inception in 2006.
While the event will remain in the Bricktown district of Oklahoma City, the new name and logo will serve to increase the game's national appeal and remove any doubt about the magnitude of the event.
"This game is a collection of the best of Triple-A Baseball," said John Allgood, Executive Director of the Oklahoma City RedHawks. "It was our desire to have a name that has a national appeal and attraction to it. The game represents Triple-A Baseball from coast to coast and the name should be reflective of this."
The 2009 Triple-A Baseball National Championship Game will take place Tuesday, September 22 at 6:00 p.m. CST, broadcast live around the world on ESPN2 and Westwood One radio. The International League's Governors' Cup Champion, by virtue of the League's victory at the 2009 Triple-A All-Star Game, will serve as the home team against the Pacific Coast League Champion.
The PCL has won each of the first three championship games played in Oklahoma City. Tucson defeated Toledo 5-2 in the inaugural Bricktown Showdown in 2006 before the next two titles were won by Sacramento, who collected a 7-1 win over Richmond in 2007 and a 4-1 win over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last season.
