New Mexico Stars News Release
The New Mexico Stars started their season off right by putting a 60-42 thumping on the San Angelo Bandits last Saturday. This week, they take their 1-0 record on the road to face the defending league champion Amarillo Venom in their season opener.
The Stars currently lead the league in total offense (306 yards), rushing (104 yards), and defensive scoring (42 points allowed). DeMarcus James and Chaz Thompson sit atop the league with 2 INT's each, KJ Black is leading the league with a 108.8 rating in passing efficiency, and Cedric Odie leads the league with 2.5 sacks through the first week.
Even with the Stars sitting at 1-0 this season, Coach Chris Williams knows they cannot slow down this week as the Venom are the Lone Star Football League's (LSFL) defending champions. "The main thing is we can't get relaxed. We have to be ready to play because the Venom are the defending champions. We'll watch the film from last year and be ready to play come Saturday."
The Venom will be headlined by QB Nate Davis, who was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 5th round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Only four players from last year's team will be returning this season, and 13 of the team's 23 players are rookies with no indoor football experience to speak of. In comparison, the Stars have only 9 players on the roster with no indoor experience.
