New Look Lineup Leads JetHawks Past Storm

May 14, 2009 - California League (CalL1)
Lancaster JetHawks News Release

(LANCASTER, CA) - With the addition of two bats - one a top-ranked prospect, the other a familiar face - the Lancaster JetHawks had all the run production they needed to beat the Lake Elsinore Storm 7-4 Wednesday night. Chris Johnson, the fifth-ranked talent in the Houston organization, and Koby Clemens, making his first start back in Lancaster after two weeks at AA Corpus Christi, were just two of the many protagonists in the JetHawks series-evening win over the Storm.

For the second straight night, Johnson had a couple hits (both doubles) and drove in X runs. Clemens had a key RBI single in the seventh to stretch the JetHawks' lead to 7-3. Jason Castro had two RBI doubles, the first of which staked the JetHawks to the lead in the first inning and the second of which capped a four-run fifth that essentially put the game away for Lancaster. Jon Gaston continued his torrid hitting; the reigning California League Hitter of the Week doubled, tripled, stole a base and scored three times.

The JetHawks used a patchwork pitching effort after Jose Duran was forced to leave the game in the third inning with an apparent blister. Leandro Cespedes came on in long relief and pitched three scoreless innings and earned his first win; the righthander did make things more difficult on himself with three wild pitches and four walks. With the JetHawks leading 6-3, J.J. Pacella pitched two thirds of an inning but was pulled when he walked Brad Chalk with two outs to put runners at the corners.

Wes Clements summoned bullpen ace Chia-Jen Lo, who promptly retired Andrew Parrino on a ground ball to second to end the threat. The Storm did get one more run in the eighth off Lo, but three runs were as close as they would come. Jordan Powell came in and retired the Storm in order in the ninth for his second save of the season.

The JetHawks will decide the series with Lake Elsinore tomorrow night at 7 PM. The radio broadcast of the game on Magic 1340 and online at www.JetHawks.com begins with the Pre-Game Show at 6:45 PM. Great ticket packages, including season tickets and flexible mini-plans, are on sale now for the 2009 season and may be ordered by calling (661) 726-5400.
