New Jersey Ironmen News Release
NEWARK, NJ (Thursday, July 19, 2007) - The New Jersey Ironmen of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) announced on Thursday that they have agreed to contract terms with forward/midfielder Gary Brooks. Brooks, whose playing rights were acquired from the California Cougars in exchange for New Jersey's third round selection (sixth overall) in the 2007 MISL Expansion Draft, becomes the second official roster player for the expansion Ironmen. The team will play a 15-match home schedule at Prudential Center in the Downtown Core Redevelopment District of Newark.
"As we continue to build our team, we felt it is a must to have a player with the characteristics that Gary possesses," said New Jersey head coach and vice president of soccer operations Omid Namazi. "He is one of the most intimidating players in our League. He brings an element of physicality, combined with his power and speed that is unmatched. He is the kind of player that can turn the game in an instance by imposing himself both physically and technically. When he last played in California, he really came into his own and became an impact player, and I'm sure he will continue to grow and improve in our system here in New Jersey."
Brooks, originally signed as a "Discovery Player" by the Philadelphia KiXX in 2004, recorded 15 points on eight goals and seven assists in 33 appearances during his rookie season, helping the KiXX reach the postseason for the eighth consecutive time. The 6-1, 180 pound forward/midfielder appeared in five contests for the KiXX during the 2005-06 season, before being dealt to the California Cougars on December 28, 2005. Brooks made 20 appearances for the Cougars, collecting 16 points on 13 goals and three assists.
Brooks, a player with more than five years of USL professional experience, signed with Crystal Palace Baltimore (USL Second Division) on July 6. The 26 year old, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, but calls Queens, NY his hometown, was a member of the 2006 Vancouver Whitecaps, who were the USL First Division Champions. Prior to that, he played for the USL-1 Atlanta Silverbacks and Virginia Beach Mariners. He was the Mariners' leading scorer in 2002.
