
NBDL Teams Host Events to Stress the Importance of Reading

GREENVILLE, S.C., November 4, 2002 â Continuing its commitment to the local community, the National Basketball Development League is celebrating "Read to Achieve Week" in all eight cities as training camps get underway. The Read to Achieve initiative is the primary community relations program for all 53 teams in the NBDL, NBA and WNBA.
In an effort to help young people develop a love for reading and to encourage adults to read to children, the NBA "family" has distributed more than 350,000 books and read to more than 250,000 children since May 2001.
One of the most comprehensive educational initiatives ever undertaken in professional sports, the NBA family has invested more than $75 million to promote a positive reading message. Over 30 Reading and Learning Centers have been created nationwide in schools and community-based organizations.
Following is a rundown of what the NBDL has in store while celebrating Read to Achieve Week.
Wednesday, Nov. 6 â The Asheville Altitude tips off the week by bringing 150 members of the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club to the Asheville Civic Center for fun educational reading stations and an opportunity to watch the team practice on Wednesday.
Thursday, Nov. 7 â The Greenville Groove will visit the Meyers Center following the morning practice. The Groove will divide into groups and visit six classrooms. The Mobile Revelers will also hold a Reading Timeout that day and then announce the local Read to Achieve All-Star Reading Team in Nov. 15.
Friday, Nov. 8 â Over 50 children from South Columbus Elementary, Downtown Elementary and Double Churches Elementary will visit the Columbus Riverdragons practice and then be divided into groups so that each Columbus player can read to them. In Roanoke, the Dazzle will welcome Madison Middle School to the Roanoke Civic Center where Dazzle players and coaches will host 10 different reading stations..
Wednesday, Nov. 13 â The North Charleston Lowgators will visit North Charleston Elementary School where 200 children will greet them for the Lowgators' Read to Achieve Assembly. The children will then be divided into groups and rotate between reading stations hosted by the Lowgators.
Thursday, Nov. 14 â The Fayetteville Patriots will travel to E.E. Miller Elementary School, divide into groups and read to kindergarten through third grade classes.
