
NBDL releases Columbus' Kareem Poole; Riverdragons resign Johnny Phillips

NEW YORK, March 26, 2002 - The National Basketball Development League has terminated the contract of Columbus Riverdragons' center Kareem Poole effective immediately for repeated violations of league policy, it was announced today by NBDL Executive Director Karl Hicks. Additionally, the Riverdragons have claimed 6-foot-10, 255-pound forward Johnny Phillips.
Poole, a 7-foot-0, 230-pound center, averaged 3.7 ppg, 7.6 rpg and 1.1 apg over 22.6 mpg in 55 games (44 starts).
This will be Phillips second stint with the Riverdragons, as he played 43 games with Columbus prior to being released on February 27. Phillips averaged 2.4 ppg on .563 (40-71 FGA) shooting with 2.3 rpg over 10.0 mpg. A rookie who played four seasons (1998-2001) at Texas Tech, Phillips was originally selected in the sixth round (44th overall) by the Riverdragons in the NBDL's Inaugural Draft.
Phillips is expected to travel with the team from Columbus, Ga. to Greenville, S.C. on Wednesday. Phillips will wear jersey no. 25.
