BUSY WEEK: Games today in Asheville and Huntsville tip off a busy week of NBDL action. The D-League's six teams will play nine games between now and next Monday.
HOME WINNING STREAK: The Asheville Altitude puts an 11-game home winning streak on the line tonight when Columbus comes to the Asheville Civic Center. Coach Joey Meyer's crew hasn't lost at home since Feb. 22 of last season when Roanoke turned the trick, 108-100.
SCHOOL DAYS: The Huntsville Flight will host about 1,500 elementary school students at Wednesday's "School Days" game. Students that have met reading goals set by their schools and the Flight early in the school year are eligible to make the field trip to the game, which tips off at 11 a.m. CT. In addition to the game, the children will receive a motivational message from former Flight player and current NBDL manager of basketball operations Doc Martin.
TWIN: "This Week in the NBDL", the league's live weekly magazine-style show on NBA TV, begins its new season Thursday at 9 p.m. ET. The first show features interviews with Columbus guard Ricky Minard, NBDL president Phil Evans and NBDL director of basketball operations Chris Alpert. The show will also take a look back at the 2004 NBDL Championship Game between the Asheville Altitude and the Huntsville Flight.
NBDL QUIZ: What current NBDL coach both played with and coached basketball legend Larry Bird?
SHANNON BACK TO ROANOKE: After spending the preseason in vet camp with the NBA Champion Detroit Pistons, forward Terrance Shannon has returned to the Roanoke Dazzle. To make room on the 10-man roster, the Dazzle waived forward George Williams.
17 ON NBA ROSTERS: With the addition of Tremaine Fowlkes and Britton Johnsen to the Indiana Pacers roster, there are currently 17 former NBDL players on NBA rosters. Fowlkes was a Columbus Riverdragon in 2001-02 and Johnsen played with the Fayetteville Patriots last season.
HOW MANY GATORADE CALLS? There have been 39 GATORADE NBDL-to-NBA player call-ups since the NBDL began play in November 2001. There have also been nine coaches, five athletic trainers and 11 game officials who have earned a promotion.
QUIZ ANSWER: Florida Flame assistant coach and general manager Terry Thimlar was a teammate of Bird's at Indiana State during a 25-2 run in 1976-77 and returned to Indiana State as an assistant coach in 1978-79, the year that Bird and the Sycamores took a perfect 28-0 record into the NCAA title game before losing to Magic Johnson and Michigan State.
