DAZZLING THOMAS: Roanoke rookie forward James Thomas (Texas '04) dazzled fans at the Roanoke Civic Center by scoring 17 points and grabbing 18 rebounds in a season-opening 114-90 victory over Fayetteville Friday night. Point guard Cory Alexander also recorded a double-double for Roanoke with 14 points and 11 assists.
OPEN WIDE: Opening weekend continues tonight when the defending NBDL champion Asheville Altitude opens on the road at Fayetteville and the Columbus Riverdragons host the Huntsville Flight.
NEW FLAME: The NBDL's only locally-owned team, the Florida Flame, rounds out opening weekend with its premier at Germain Arena Sunday evening against the Roanoke Dazzle. A group of Southwest Florida business people purchased the team that was previously the Charleston Lowgators.
FAYETTEVILLE AND BEYOND: Three of 10 players on the Fayetteville Patriots' opening-day roster are international players. Center Ruben Boumtje Boumtje is from Cameroon, forward Ousmane Cisse is from Mali and forward Steve Ross is from Canada.
8 OF 12: Five-time NBA All-Star Dennis Johnson makes his NBDL coaching debut for the Florida Flame Sunday. Eight of 12 NBDL coaches either played or coached in the NBA.
3 AND 7: The NBA has approved two rules changes â the Three-Point Rule and the Seven-Second Rule â for the 2004-05 NBDL season. The short version of the new rule states that three-point field goals will count only after the 3:00 mark in each quarter, and for the entire overtime period. The Seven-Second Rule states that a team shall not be in continuous possession of a ball which is in its backcourt for more than 7 consecutive seconds as opposed to 8 seconds in the NBA.
SCOUTING MISSION: Over 60-percent of NBDL games during the first three seasons have been scouted live by NBA teams. Eleven NBA teams have already reserved a spot at courtside for the first 17 NBDL games of the 2004-05 season.
NBDL QUIZ: The have been nine NBDL coaches who have earned a promotion to the NBA in the last three years. Who were the ones who earned a call-up after the 2003-04 season?
TWIN: "This Week in the NBDL", the D-League's weekly live show returns to NBA TV on Dec. 2 and is scheduled to air every Thursday at 9 p.m. throughout the season. Andre Aldridge serves as host.
