WHAT CAN'T HAPPEN: Roanoke, Fayetteville and Columbus can't host a first-round game in the NBDL Delta Air Lines Postseason Classic. They can, however, still qualify to board the bus for one.
JUST WON'T GO AWAY: Long ago left for dead after losing 15 of 21 to start the season, the Columbus Riverdragons now refuse to let the lid be nailed shut. With three games left, Coach Jeff Malone's club has won eight of its last 11 and is still alive for the fourth and final postseason berth should they win out.
AMAZING, BUT TRUE: After losing eight of its last 12 games, Charleston can still win the NBDL regular season title and the top seed in the postseason tournament. Why? Because from December 2 through January 29 the Lowgators won 16 of 20.
THANKS MRS. BROWN: The most common surname in the NBDL is Brown, which includes Tierre in Charleston, Damone in Huntsville and Ernest in Fayetteville, none of which are related. There is only one English, Carl in Charleston, who is actually Canadian.
BOB WAS FIRST: Bob Thornton was the first NBDL coach to be called up to the NBA. After one season as head coach of the Huntsville Flight, Thornton was hired as an assistant coach for the Chicago Bulls on July 8, 2002. Former NBDL coaches who have earned a callup include:
Coach NBDL Team NBA/WNBA Team
Dell Demps Mobile Revelers New York Knicks scout
Harold Ellis Roanoke Dazzle Atlanta Hawks scout
Alex English Charleston Lowgators Atlanta Hawks (currently
76ers assistant)
Stephanie Ready Greenville Groove Washington Mystics assistant
Bob Thornton Huntsville Flight Chicago Bulls scout
NBDL ON NBA TV: April 5 at 4 p.m. ET, Charleston at Fayetteville; April 6 at 6 p.m. "TWIN".
LITTLE KNOWN NBDL FACT: The Columbus Riverdragons are hosting a local Doctors vs. Lawyers Basketball Game prior to the April 9 game against Asheville. Hey, did you hear the one about...? Never mind, it's just way too easy. Proceeds are for a great cause, however, benefiting "Our House", a shelter for children awaiting foster care.
