NBA TV To Televise D-League Draft
Published on October 30, 2007 under NBA G League (G League) News Release
NBA TV will present the NBA Development League Draft live on Thursday, Nov. 1 at 8:30 p.m. ET. Rick Kamla will host the draft selection show that will be held at NBA TV's studios in Secaucus, N.J. NBA Director of Scouting Marty Blake, along with his son, Assistant Director of Scouting Ryan Blake, will provide analysis on the selections by the 14 D-League teams. Prior to the draft, the network will air a half-hour preview show beginning at 8 p.m. ET.
The Colorado 14ers have the first overall pick, having won the draft lottery earlier this month in Dallas, TX. The defending champion Dakota Wizards own the second selection followed by the Albuquerque Thunderbirds and Idaho Stampede; while the Rio Grande Valley Vipers round out the top five. In an effort to distribute the talent evenly, the draft order will be reversed in each round. With 10 rounds and 140 players selected, it will be the largest draft in the league's history.
During the telecast, Kamla will interview D-League President Dan Reed, Vice President of Basketball Operations and Player Personnel Chris Alpert, Director of Basketball Operations and former NBA player Shawn Respert as well as Utah Flash owner Brandt Andersen.
This year there are 44 former D-League players on opening day NBA rosters. Last year 62 players on end-of-season NBA rosters competed in the NBA Development League at some point during their careers. Referees are also honing their skills in the NBA's official minor league as every referee hired by the NBA since 2002 has worked in the D-League. In total 25 per cent of all NBA referees refined their skills in the D-League. This season also features the first former D-League coach to be promoted to head coach in the NBA as Sam Vincent leads the Charlotte Bobcats.
The complete order of the first round of the D-League Draft will be:
1) Colorado 14ers
2) Dakota Wizards
3) Albuquerque Thunderbirds
4) Idaho Stampede
5) Rio Grande Valley Vipers
6) Sioux Falls Skyforce
