New York/New Jersey Juggernaut News Release
LITTLE FALLS, NJ....The NY/NJ Juggernaut (31-18) avoided the sweep with a 3-0 win over the second place Akron Racers (32-17), putting them only one game behind Akron in the standings.
A two-out rally in the second inning highlighted by second baseman Carri Leto's run-scoring single to center, sparked the Nauts' offense. Designated player Germaine Fairchild began the rally with a two-out walk, and then scored on Leto's single after a double down the left field line by catcher Courtney Scott advanced her to third. Scott would then score on a throwing error by the Racers to put NY/NJ up 2-0.
Juggernaut starter Amanda Scott would keep the Nauts ahead for good, giving up no runs on three hits, two walks, and seven strikeouts. The Racers threatened to break through in the fifth inning after back-to-back singles by first baseman Nicole Trimboli and designated player Nikki Myersand, plus a fielder's choice put runners on second and third with two outs. However Scott got pinch hitter Dana Degen to pop up and end the inning.
Another throwing error by the Akron defense would allow Wilkerson to score the Nauts' third run of the game in the fourth inning. Three singles by right fielder Kellie Wilkerson, Fairchild, and Leto loaded the bases for the Juggernaut. Akron attempted to tag Fairchild out rounding second base but threw the ball into right field, letting Wilkerson put the Nauts up 3-0. Kaci Whitehead got the start for Akron and gave up one earned run on four hits, one walk and three strikeouts in 2.1 innings pitched. Radara McHugh came in to relieve Whitehead in the third inning, giving up no earned runs on three this, three walks, and three strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched.
The Juggernaut will continue their quest for first place in the final series of the regular season against the first-place Texas Thunder on Sunday August 8th. The game will be broadcasted live on the YES Network at 7:35 pm.
