Native America team reschedules tryouts and apologizes
August 29, 2004 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Native America News Release
Indianapolis, IN. Joe Newman, ABA Co-Founder, today announced that the seven tryout camps originally scheduled by the Native American team have been combined into a single tryout camp in early October. According to Newman, the seven tryout camps ranged from 2-13 players, not enough for anyone tryout camp. Native America decided to consolidate the tryout camps into one at which all 47 players who enrolled will receive a full tryout.
Spider Ledesma, President of the Native American team, said, "We originally planned 7 scheduled tryouts in different regions (Billings, Rapid City, Albuquerque, Seattle, Oklahoma, Pendleton and Phoenix) but due to limited enrollment by players and in combination with absence of Native American sponsorship support from Native casinos, we decided to invite all paid and registered players to Albuquerque. We believe the tryout (to be announced officially next week) will be held at McCurdy High School, about 90 minutes outside of Albuquerque in Espanola, New Mexico. We are waiting for a firm commitment from the school."
Clinton Pilcher, SVP Basketball Operations added, "We continue to generate quite a bit of enthusiasm from the native players who will be attending our tryouts in October, their families and fans all over in general. There is a lot of "buzz" about our historic home opener. Our program truly generates hope, positive feelings and excitement among so many and we look forward to the tryouts."
Ledesma concluded, "I'd like to extend my sincere apology to those players who enrolled and were not able to tryout during the summer. You have my word that you'll have every chance to show your skills during three days of drills and scrimmaging in front of coaches, the media and interested fans. We'll make it worth your while. The atmosphere encompassing Native America, which we cultivate by praise and thanksgiving, is always upbeat and confident that what God, our Heavenly Father, has started in us. He is also able to perform it, execute it, finish it. Our spirts are optimistic and hope is high and in unlimited supply."
