A basketball Hall of Famer, two-time Olympian and three-time All-American Lieberman has been a pioneer for women in sports and the game of women's basketball throughout her entire career. A native of Queens, N.Y. Lieberman broke into the national spotlight in 1974 when she earned one of 12 spots on the US National Team. In 1975, she helped Team USA win gold at the World Championships and earn silver at the Pan American Games. A year later Lieberman became the youngest basketball player - male or female - to compete in the Olympic Games, earning silver at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.
Following her Olympic experience, Lieberman entered Old Dominion University on a full athletic scholarship where she would ultimately lead the Lady Monarchs to two consecutive National Championships and a WNIT Championship. During her collegiate career, Lieberman became the first two-time winner of the prestigious Wade Trophy - awarded annually to the Player of the Year.
Lieberman began her professional basketball career with the Dallas Diamonds of the Women's Basketball League in 1981 and led the team to the 1984 WABA Championship while earning league MVP honors. She continued to play professionally as the only female in the all-male United States Basketball League with the Springfield Fame (1986) and Long Island Knights (1987). In 1988, Lieberman toured the world with the acclaimed Harlem Globetrotters as a member of the Washington Generals before retiring from professional basketball.
In 1997, Lieberman came out of retirement and was drafted by the Phoenix Mercury during the WNBA's inaugural season and was the league's oldest player at age 39. After one WNBA season, Lieberman was named Head Coach and General Manager of the Detroit Shock, guiding the team to the highest win percentage of any expansion team in professional sports.
Following her tenure with the Shock, Lieberman served as president of the Women's Sports Foundation for two years. In 2004, she returned to coaching as head coach of the NWBL where she led the team to a championship title and runner up finish the following season.
After her stint with the Fury, Lieberman's career progressed from player and coaching into national commentating, motivational speaking and philanthropic endeavors. She currently serves as an analyst for ESPN/ABC for the NBA, WNBA and NCAA Women's Basketball. She has also written for the Dallas Morning News, The New York Times and USA Today while authoring two books - an autobiography Lady Magic and Basketball for Women and Playbook for Success in 2010.
In 2008, Lieberman returned to the WNBA at age 50 - breaking her own record as the league's oldest player. A year later, she was hired as the Texas Legends' first head coach, becoming the first female head coach to lead an NBA or NBA D-League team.
Lieberman's impact on women's basketball and professional sport is partially highlighted by the Nancy Lieberman Award, named in her honor and bestowed annually on the most outstanding female point guard in NCAA Division I Basketball.
