Wheeling Nailers News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - Jimmy Kilpatrick's goal at 11:21 of overtime sealed a 2-1 victory for the Greenville Road Warriors over the Wheeling Nailers in game two of the Eastern Conference Seminfinals at the Bi-lo Center Thursday night . The best-of-seven series is now tied 1-1.
For the second consecutive night, the Nailers ran into the penalty troubles in the first period. Greenville has three power play opportunities in the opening frame, including a 5-on-3 advantage. However, Wheeling's penalty remained stingy and was able to kill all of the penalties off. However, Shane Harper broke a scoreless tie at 17:33 of the period scoring on a wrist shot off his own rebound, to give the Road Warriors a 1-0 lead after the first period.
Neither team gave an inch in a tight second period, as both team's put in solid defensive efforts to keep the score 1-0 in favor of Greenville after 40 minutes played.
Wheeling tied the game at one as a pair of brothers connected for a great play in front. Paul Crowder beat his man in the zone to set up a 2-on-0 rush in front. Crowder slid the puck across the crease to Tim Crowder who buried the puck into the net past Nic Riopel. Greenville created chances late in the game, but a stellar performance by Peter Delmas was able to force the game to overtime.
Both teams went back and forth in the extra session, but a missed assignment in front would be costly for Wheeling. A wide open Marc-Olivier Vallerand fired a shot from the right wing circle, which was stopped by Delmas, but the rebound was picked up by Jimmy Kilpatrick who was able to beat Delmas on the second chance to seal the 2-1 overtime win.
Wheeling was outshot in the game 42-23. Delmas suffers his second loss of the postseason recording 40 saves, while Nic Riopel earns his second victory stopping 22 of 23 shots faced.
