Asheville Altitude News Release
ASHEVILLE, N.C., Feb. 7, 2004 - The Asheville Altitude received a much-needed inside presence from their newest addition Mamadou N'Diaye who registered a double-double, pouring in 17 points, muscling down 11 rebounds and blocking three shots in a 98-86 victory over the Roanoke Dazzle Saturday night at the Asheville Civic Center.
"Yesterday I didn't do very well so I wanted to come out tonight and play well," said Mamadou N'Diaye. "The team is great though, they made me feel like I've been here for a long time."
The match-up was intense early with nine ties and three lead changes in the first half before the Altitude opened the second quarter with a 16-2 run. Roanoke Coach Kent Davison's ejection from the game with 4:51 to go in the half marked the second consecutive game at the Civic Center in which the opposing team's coach made an early exit before the end of regulation. Roanoke's Terrence Shannon also left the game in the second quarter after suffering an injury.
Asheville came out hot in the second half as well, opening the third quarter with an 11-4 run. The competition remained heated as both Desmond Penigar and Kris Lang were hit with technical fouls in the second half. Injury woes continued for the Dazzle as Donald Hand was forced to leave the game due to injury in the fourth quarter.
Roanoke made a charge late in the second half with a 14-5 run to pull to within eight points at 92-84, but Asheville had an answer for them, putting together a 6-2 run to close out the game and seal the win.
In addition to N'Diaye, five other Asheville players scored in double figures as Desmond Penigar led all scorers with a game-high 21 points, six rebounds and two steals. Greg Stevenson came close to a double-double with 12 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Rusty LaRue and Antonio Meeking each chipped in 11 points coming off the bench.
George Williams and Marque Perry paced the Dazzle with 18 points apiece. Williams added 10 rebounds to post a double-double. Newcomer Matt Carroll was the only other Roanoke player to reach double figures with 14 points.
The Altitude will return to action Tuesday, Feb. 10 when they host the Charleston Lowgators. The game features a triple-header as two local high schools boy and girls teams compete prior to the Altitude tip-off.
