Myrtle Beach Comes Back for 4-2 Win
May 11, 2021 - Carolina League (CarL)
Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Myrtle Beach, SC - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Chicago Cubs), needed a big hit from newcomer Matt Mervis, and they got it in the 8th inning. In his first game with Myrtle Beach, the left-hander's bases clearing double gave the Pelicans the lead for good, hanging on by a final of 4-2.
Stephen Paolini led the Augusta offense going 2-for-4 at the top of the lineup. Alec Barger gave the GreenJackets 4.2 innings without allowing an earned run in his second start of 2021.
The Jackets scored in the first inning when Paolini doubled, and reached third base on a throwing error. Vaughn Grissom grounded out to drive in Paolini and the Jackets quickly led 1-0.
Myrtle Beach responded in the 3rd inning as a throwing error from the catcher Javier Valdes tied the score at one. Bryson Horne broke the tie in the 4th. Horne's single scored Landon Stephens. Augusta led 2-1.
Gabby Rodriguez came out of the Jackets bullpen to grab a much-needed strikeout facing Chicago Cubs #5 overall prospect Ed Howard. With two men on base, the strikeout ended the threat in the 5th inning.
In the 8th, Myrtle Beach loaded the bases for Mervis and his gap-shot vaulted Myrtle Beach to the 4-2 victory.
NOTES:

Grissom now has a hit and an RBI in each of his last three games
