February 25, 2009 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release

The #1 ranked Southeast Texas Mustangs (22-1) found out earlier in the day that they had been ranked #1 again in the ABA Power Rankings for the 8th consecutive week. Then they went out on the court of the Ford Arena on Tuesday night to win their 21st consecutive game as they defeated the Texas City Rangers (2-12) 116-94.

With the victory the Mustangs tie the Utah Snowbears 21 game winning streak that the Snowbears set in the 2004-05 season. The streak is second All-Time in ABA History. The longest winning streak in ABA History is held by the Indiana Alley Cats from the 2001-02 season when the Alley Cats won 26 consecutive games.

On this night the Mustangs started slow as the Rangers hit a 3 pointer by Derrick Bunton on the game's opening possession and the onslaught continued early on with the Rangers taking as much as a 6 point lead in the first quarter. The Mustangs came back to cut the Rangers lead to 4 as the first period closed. At the end of the first quarter the Rangers from Texas City led 29-25.

In the second period the Southeast Texas bench took over the game as Antonio Lawrence, Donald Harris, and Jamaal Davis led the Mustangs back into control of game. The Mustangs roared back to take a 9 point lead into the locker-room at the half.

The 3rd quarter, as it has so many times this season belonged totally to the Mustangs. The Mustangs outscored the Rangers 39-22 in the quarter and led by as many as 20 points. The Mustangs led 89-68 and were in total control of the game heading into the last quarter of play.

In the final stanza Southeast Texas cleared its bench and controlled the remainder of the game. The highlight of the final quarter was the defensive effort of Mustangs center Johnny Tyson as the "Spyderman" blocked 5 shots and erased any hopes of a comeback by Texas City!

The Mustangs played without two of its top players on this night as power forward DeRon Rutledge and guard Anthony Lumpkin sat out the game with injuries.

Tim Pledger led the Mustangs with 19 points and 15 assist. Currye Todd followed up with 17 points on 4 long range treys on the night. Mustangs power forward Lamar Sanders filled in nicely for Rutledge with a double/double on the evening with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jerry Williams and Alex Sanders chipped in 12 and 10 points respectively. Bunton led Texas City with a game high 34 points and Silvester Simple followed up with 25 points in a losing effort.

The Mustangs and Rangers will get back together on Friday night of this week in Freeport, TX on the Rangers homecourt at Brazosport High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
