Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release

The #1 ranked Southeast Texas Mustangs (18-1) won their 17th straight game on Monday night against the Texas City Rangers (2-9).

Southeast Texas once again came out in the first quarter and took total control of the game over Texas City, who was coming off their biggest win of the season with an upset victory on Sunday night in San Antonio against the Texas Fuel 98-94. The Mustangs did not let the Rangers breathe as their smothering defense forced 15 first half turnovers. Alex Sanders and Antonio Lawrence led the way defensively for the Mustangs! The Mustangs led at the half 57-42.

In the second half the Mustangs opened the 3rd quarter on a 15-7 run and found themselves up 72-49 with 7:09 left in the period. Southeast Texas never let the lead drop below 14 points the rest of the way until Larry Satchell's lay-up cut the lead to 11 points with less than a minute the play. The Mustangs held on to finish the game and notch their 18th win on the season.

Guard Tim Pledger led four Mustangs in double figures with 18 points. Pledger scored 13 of his points in the second half. Pledger also dished out 9 assist on the night.

Power forward DeRon Rutledge scored 17 points and pulled down 8 rebounds, while Sanders and Jamaal Davis finished with 16 and 13 points respectively.

Currye Todd added 12 points and Lawrence finished with 11 for the Mustangs.

Sylvester Simple led Texas City with 27 points. Johnathon Maxwell and Satchell followed up with 20 and 19 points respectively.

The Mustangs will square off with the only team to defeat them thus far this season, the Texas Fuel on Wednesday night at Ford Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
