Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release

The ABA's #1 ranked Southeast Texas Mustangs (13-1) defeated the Mississippi Blues (1-9) on Sunday afternoon on their home court at the Ford Arena in Beaumont, TX 119-84.

The Mustangs have now won 12 straight games and are the hottest team in professional basketball. The winning streak began on December 12, 2008 and has seen the Mustangs rise from a pre-season rating of 16th in the ABA Power Rankings to the #1 position, which they have now held for the last five weeks.

Mississippi came out hot and a Jarrell Jones 3 pointer put them ahead 5-2 to start the game. A Mustangs' 15 to 4 run led by Tim Pledger, Currye Todd and Jamaal Davis put the Mustangs up 20 to 6 with 3:30 to play in the first quarter. Daniel Price then pushed his Blues to a strong finish of the first quarter and the Blues found themselves down 26-16 after one period of play.

In the second period Price, Jones and Richard Griffin kept pace with the stampeding Mustangs. But Anthony Lumpkin, Antonio Lawrence, Jerry Williams, and Alvin Jefferson would not allow the Blues to get any closer than 10 points and the Mustangs won the quarter and extended their lead to 14 points. Southeast Texas led 49-35 at the half.

The 3rd quarter totally belonged to the high flying Mustangs as they came out of the locker-room to begin the second half on a 10-2 run that put them up 59-38. After a Mississippi time-out things did not get any better as the Mustangs extended their lead to 30 points midway through the quarter. Mustangs' forwards Lamar Sanders and newcomer Alex Sanders proved to be too much for the visitors from Jackson, MS. Southeast Texas led at the end of the 3rd quarter a whopping 85-54 score.

In the final period of play the Mississippi Blues could only hold on as the Mustangs found their stride. The Mustangs cleared their bench with 8 minutes to play and rode out a 30 point dominating victory over the Blues from Mississippi.

Eight players scored in double figures for the SETX Mustangs and every player scored in the game. The Mustangs were led in scoring by Lumpkin with 15 points. Davis and Williams both had their best scoring games of the season as both frontline players finished with 14 points respectively. Griffin led the Mississippi Blues with 18 points.

The Mustangs hit the road this week as they travel to West Texas to take on the West Texas Whirlwinds in Midland, TX on Thursday night, January 29th, and they'll then head to Kansas City, MO to face the Kansas City Spartans on Saturday night, January 30th. Southeast Texas will return home to the Ford Arena on Saturday night, February 7th. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
