Mustangs Scramble in Preseason Game
March 4, 2011 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Milwaukee Mustangs News Release
Quad City, IL ¬" The Milwaukee Mustangs played the Iowa Barnstormers in one of the most storied Arena Football markets, the Quad Cities, on the Mississippi River, (Illinois-Iowa) for a benefit game to support the Genesis Pediatric Therapy Center. The two scrimmages had been a fury of energy from both teams with several helmets being ripped from their owners ¬â¢ heads. With that passion in mind coming into this match up, neither team let us down.
Both teams went 4 and out on their initial drives, but then the Mustangs got rolling with Gary Rodgers at QB, and a field goal to cap off their second drive. Unfortunately, the Barnstormers came right down the field on their next two possessions to make the game 14-3. Unfortunately, the Mustangs could not get in a rhythm the remainder of the second period as Barnstormers Quarterback and former Iowa Hawkeye Heisman trophy runner-up Brad Banks came in and kept the Barnstormers moving forward with a 17 yard TD to Jesse Schmidt for the third TD of the half for the Barnstormers.
The second half started off just as bad with a 1-play Touchdown pass from Banks to Scott with 3 broken tackles in the defensive backfield. A missed extra point made it 23-3. The Mustangs would not be held down for long, as Eric Ward came in and led the Mustangs on back-to-back scoring drives by throwing TD passes to Eley Jr. and Damian Harrell to bring them back into the game. However, every time Milwaukee scored, so did the Barnstormers. A kickoff return for a touchdown and another reception for a TD by Jesse Schmidt kept the margin 34-17. Then a touchdown by Iowa with 1:17 left in the game made the score 40-17. 4 plays later, Iowa added a punch in the gut to Milwaukee with a QB sneak with 30 seconds on the clock to make it 47-17, and that ¬â¢s how it would end in the Quad Cities.
Coach Landsee ¬â¢s roster will be reduced after this evening ¬â¢s game. The 2011 team will finalize camp up into the final week before their home opener on March 14th 2011. The Mustangs home opener is set for MONDAY, March 14th versus the CHICAGO RUSH. Kickoff is set for 6:30 PM at The Bradley Center. SINGLE-GAME TICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE!
