Mustangs Run Win Streak to Nine With Win Against Blues
January 10, 2009 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release
The #1 Ranked ABA Team in the Country, the SETX Mustangs (10-1) ran their win streak to 9 games with a hard fought 120-111 win over the Mississippi Blues in Jackson, MS on Friday night.
It was by far the toughest road game of the season for the Mustangs, who found themselves down by as many as 14 points late in the second half. But Anthony "Lump" Lumpkin and Tim Pledger led the Mustangs back to gain another important road victory.
Southeast Texas trailed at the half 58-51. The hot shooing Blues kept constant pressure on the #1 ranked Mustangs throughout the first half. It was by far the best the Blues have played against the Mustangs this season and they totally controlled the first half of play.
Down by 14 points with 5:50 to play in the third quarter Pledger's three point play off a steal and full-court drive to the basket cut the lead to 12 points. A follow up three point shot by Lumpkin cut the lead to under 10 points and the Mustangs started to gain momentum. The spirited play of Donnie Jackson and Antonio "Red" Lawrence off the bench turned the tide in favor of Mustangs as the 3rd quarter came to an end with the Mustangs trailing by 4 points.
In the 4th quarter the Southeast Texas guard tandem of Lumpkin and Pledger took over the game and with just under six minutes to play the Mustangs seized their first lead at 94-92. From that point the Mustangs built their lead to 13 points and hit crucial free-throws down the stretch to take their 9th consecutive victory.
The Mustangs again put seven players in double figures with their balanced scoring. Lumpkin led the way with 29 points and Pledger followed up with 27. DeRon Rutledge, who was double teamed in the post all night had 12 points. Lawrence chipped in 11 points. Lamar Sanders, Currye Todd, and Jamaal Davis each scored 10 points respectively.
The Mustangs continue to be the hottest team in the ABA and hold the longest win streak in the League this season. The Mustangs next home game will be on Thursday night, January 15th against the Texas Fuel, who is the only team to defeat the Mustangs this season. The Fuel is ranked #2 in the nation in the ABA Power Rankings. Thursday night will be Fan Appreciation Night, so do come out and cheer on the Mustangs at the Ford Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
