Milwaukee Mustangs News Release
Milwaukee - After suffering heart wrenching losses in the final seconds for two consecutive weeks, the Milwaukee Mustangs (5-11) defeated the New Orleans Voodoo (3-13) in commanding fashion, 76-55, on Saturday evening.
Ironman of the Game Justin Lawrence, playing both defensive line and fullback for the `Stangs, helped the Mustangs score a season-high 76 points by rumbling into the end zone for four rushing touchdowns as the Mustangs offense coasted throughout the contest.
However, five defensive turnovers truly sparked the victory, with Dexter Jackson's second quarter fumble recovery and return for a touchdown swinging momentum towards Milwaukee in a first half that had been rather back and forth.
Deep in Voodoo territory, Dwayne LeFall swooped around the edge of the New Orleans offensive line and stripped the ball from quarterback D. Bryant as his arm was going forward. Jackson picked up the ball inside the five yard line and dashed in for the score, giving the Mustangs a 42-27 lead that they would take into the half.
But that would be the first of three straight turnovers, as the Milwaukee defense would force a fumble at their own one-yard line that was recovered by Marcus Everett to begin the second half. After a drive that stretched the entire field and a Lawrence touchdown, the defense went back to work. Brandon Brinkley, who already had a fumble recovery on a kickoff earlier, intercepted a Bryant pass and returned it 46 yards for a pick-six to give the Mustangs a 55-27 lead.
From that point on, Milwaukee was in cruise control, scoring again on an Eddie Davis onside kick return for a touchdown and exchanging scores with New Orleans the rest of the way. Brinkley would add his second interception with just over four minutes to play to further put the game out of reach.
Offensive Player of the Game quarterback Gino Guidugli finished 23 of 31 for 283 yards, and four touchdowns, three of which coming in the first half. His dynamic receiving duo of Victor Williams and Dwayne Eley, Jr. each eclipsed the 100-yard mark, with Williams amassing 115 yards and three touchdowns and Eley, Jr. chipping in 102 yards and a score.
Following their largest margin of victory this season, the Mustangs will return home to play the Iowa Barnstormers next Friday, July 15th at 7 p.m. (CST) in their final home game of the 2011 regular season. The struggling Barnstormers (4-11) will take on the Kansas City Command tomorrow evening.
