Mustangs Defeat Beijing To Win 20th Straight Victory
February 18, 2009 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release
The #1 ranked Southeast Texas Mustangs (21-1) won their 20th straight game on Tuesday night on their home court at the Ford Arena in Beaumont, TX.
It was not easy early on for the Mustangs as Beijing came out early to take a 6-0 lead before the Mustangs took a time-out at the 9:32 mark of the first quarter. Mustangs point guard Tim Pledger came out of the time-out to hit a big 3 pointer to cut the lead in half. From that point the Mustangs and Beijing jockeyed for position. With just under a minute to play Alex Sanders scored to tie the game at 24 all. A missed Beijing shot led to Pledger coming up with the ball and he then hit a long distance three at the buzzer to give the Mustangs a 27-24 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Mustangs quickly came out in the second period and with Pledger leading the way with the help of the deep Mustangs' bench got control of the game. The Mustangs pushed the lead to 10 just before halftime and went into the locker-room up 54-45.
The 3rd quarter totally belonged to the Southeast Texas Mustangs as they outscored Beijing 39-24 behind Currye Todd, Sanders, and Pledger. Todd scored 11 points in the quarter on 3 three pointers. The Mustangs led 93-69 heading into the last quarter of play.
In the 4th quarter the Mustangs had no let up and veteran power forward DeRon Rutledge took over the game to score 9 points down the stretch as the Mustangs sprinted to their 20th straight victory 121-88.
Pledger led the Mustangs with 29 points and 14 assist. Rutledge followed up with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Todd and Sanders each chipped in 14 a piece respectively. Jamal Staten led Beijing with 22 points.
The Mustangs hit the road on Friday as they will travel to Freeport, TX to face the Texas City Rangers. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
