Port Huron Icehawks News Release

PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks outshot the Muskgeon Lumberjacks 45-20 on Friday, but were thwarted by strong goaltending and a strong Muskegon power play and fell 5-4 in Game One of Round One in the International Hockey League Turner Cup Playoffs.

The Lumberjacks had help from goaltender Clayton Pool, who made 41 saves, and a special teams unit that converted on two of three power play opportunities and killed off six of seven penalties.

Though the Icehawks outshot the Lumberjacks 34-10 through the first two periods of play, the lead changed hands several times and Port Huron emerged from the second frame with a narrow 4-3 advantage.

Both teams capitalized on early power play opportunities to find themselves deadlocked not long after the first puck drop. Port Huron's Ian Turner scored on the power play at 2:07 in the opening period. He was assisted by Tab Lardner and Kris Vernarsky. The Lumberjacks retaliated with a goal from Darryl McArthur exactly one minute later.

Muskegon's John DiPace scored early in the second period to give his team their first advantage of the game. Several minutes later, the Icehawks fired back with goals 15 seconds apart from Kerry Bowman and Kris Vernarsky to regain the lead. Both teams scored once more before the period came to a close. Billy Collins beat goalie Larry Sterling at 15:33 to tie the game, but Bowman added his second of the night with just 52 seconds left in the period to put the Icehawks on top again.

The Lumberjacks struck twice in the third period. Robin Bouchard scored on the power play just 33 seconds in and Luke Stauffacher notched the game winner at 10:02.

The Icehawks outshot the Lumberjacks 45-20 overall. Icehawks goalie Larry Sterling made 15 saves. Port Huron was 1-7 on the power play and Muskegon was 2-3.
