Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs scored three powerplay goals on their way to a dominating 6-1 victory over the Tulsa Oilers in a penalty-filled Game 2 of their Berry Conference Semifinal series Saturday at the CenturyTel Center. The series is now tied at one game apiece heading into Game 3 Tuesday at the BOK Center in Tulsa.
Simon Mangos assisted on four of Bossier-Shreveport's first five goals in the contest and Travis Clayton tacked on three helpers of his own. Jeff Kyrzakos and Clay Plume both contributed "Gordie Howe hat tricks" to the victory with a goal, an assist and a fight each. The Mudbugs scored three powerplay goals on seven opportunities as Tulsa committed three five-minute major penalties and had three players ejected on their way to racking up 67 penalty minutes. The teams combined for over 105 total minutes in penalties between them.
The Mudbugs started strong in the opening minutes, outshooting Tulsa 5-0 early on and taking a 1-0 lead when the rebound of a Simon Mangos shot bounced off the end boards and right to Shawn Limpright, who fired the puck in at 4:31. The Oilers outshot Bossier-Shreveport for the remainder of the period, but John DeCaro made 10 saves as the âBugs took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.
Bossier-Shreveport began to take control in the second frame on an early tally from Clay Plume and a rebound goal by Jeff Kyrzakos midway through the period that made it 3-0. Tulsa's Evan Kotsopoulos was then issued a major penalty and a game misconduct for a cross-checking incident on Jamie Milam, who quickly got his retribution with a powerplay goal as the âBugs went up 4-0 and chased Oilers goalie Trevor Cann from the game.
Marty Standish scored a shorthanded goal one minute after that to get Tulsa on the board, but then was also removed from the game for initiating a knee-on-knee collision that knocked Shawn Limpright out of the game. Steven Crampton tallied another goal off an assist from Mangos on the ensuing powerplay to put the âBugs up 5-1 at 17:55. With just 3.8 seconds left in the period, Plume and Clayton helped set up a Justin Aikins goal that gave the Mudbugs their biggest lead of the playoffs at 6-1.
The third period was calm until John DeCaro left his crease to play the puck with 5:32 remaining and was intentionally run over by Tulsa's Brennan Barker, setting off a melee that added even more to the PIM total. Barker was ejected from the game and issued a charging major penalty for the incident. Ryan Munce came in for DeCaro and the âBugs finished out the win on the powerplay, knotting the series at one.
John DeCaro (3-0) stayed unbeaten so far in the playoffs with 17 saves as the Mudbugs heavily outshot the Oilers 41-18. Trevor Cann (4-2) was tagged with the loss after making 17 saves in 34 minutes before Ian Keserich stopped 18 shots in relief. In addition to their impressive 3-for-7 night on the powerplay, Bossier-Shreveport also killed off all five Tulsa advantages in the contest.
The teams will now travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma for Game 3 as the âBugs look to take a 2-1 series lead Tuesday night at 7:05 pm. Game 4 will then follow Friday night at 7:35 from the BOK Center. Visit www.mudbugshockey.com for radio broadcast and CHL-TV watch party information!
