June 24, 2018 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Batavia Muckdogs News Release
Today's Game- The Muckdogs head back out on the road for a three game series against the State College Spikes. This is the first meeting between the two teams today. Batavia has an off day after this series before returning home.
That was yesterday- The third game of the series against Williamsport was called to due unplayable field conditions, and will be made up as part of a doubleheader on August 23rd.
Offense Overload- In six of the last seven games, Batavia has managed to score at least six runs in each of those contests. Batavia has one of the top scorers in the league, with Jerar Encarnacion sitting in second place with ten runs.
Exploding Encarnacion- Jerar Encarnacion has been on a tear to start of the season. On his current eight game hit streak to open the year, he's hitting .514. He leads the league in hits (18), RBI (10), he's third in extra base hits (5) and sits second with his .514 average. He also has the most defensive assists by any outfielder in the league with three, all coming on June 19th against West Virginia.
Beginning from behind- The Muckdogs have had trouble with giving up early leads in ballgames. Batavia has trailed after the fifth inning on six different occasions so far this season, and have gone 1-5 in those contests.
Same Skipper- Calling the shots this season will be second year manager Mike Jacobs. Jacobs spent seven years in the bigs with Mets, Marlins, Royals, and the Diamondbacks. He clubbed 100 HR's in his MLB career, 32 of which came in 2008 with the Florida Marlins. He also tacked on 93 RBI's that year. His first year as a manager in Batavia saw the team go 30-45.
Some Superlatives- This year's players come in all shapes and sizes. The tallest being Sean Reynolds who towers at 6'7". The shortest five check in at 5'11". The youngest Muckdog is Dakota Bennett who is currently 18, and the oldest on the roster is Logan Boyd who is 24.
Spikes sticking around- Batavia will have three more series against the Spikes after this one in State College. The next meeting occurs July 7-9 back at Dwyer Stadium.
Recent Roster Action- RHP Osman Gutierrez was released, OF Ricardo Cespedes was called up to Greensboro, and RHP Jameson McGrane was assigned to Batavia
Marlins Update- Miami got a big boost from catcher JT Realmuto last night as they topped the Rockies 6-2. Realmuto ripped a grand slam during a five-run seventh inning, that would end up being the difference in the ballgame.
