Moustakas Off To Hot Start In AFL

Burlington, IA (October 19, 2009) - The Kansas City Royals have seven minor leaguers playing in the Arizona Fall League that started last week. All seven players play with the Surprise Rafters.

3B Mike Moustakas (played with the Bees in '08) is off to a hot start for the Rafters. In a 12-5 win last Thursday, he went 3-5 with two doubles, a home run, and seven RBI. In three games, Moustakas is hitting .462. While with the Bees in 2008, Moustakas led the Midwest League with 22 home runs and was named Bees Offensive Player of the Year.

Joining Moustakas in the infield is SS Jeff Bianchi ('07). After a 3-hit game Saturday, Bianchi is hitting .278 so far with three runs scored and two RBI. OF David Lough ('08) is also on the team but has yet to play for the Rafters. Lough and Bianchi both started the 2009 season in High-A Wilmington, then were moved up to Double-A Northwest Arkansas. Bianchi hit a combined .308 with 74 runs scored and 70 RBI while Lough hit .325 with 14 home runs and 61 RBI.

Former Bees' pitchers Brandon Sisk ('08), Ben Swaggerty ('08), and Blake Wood ('07) are members of the team as well. This past season, Sisk finished 2nd in the Carolina League with 22 saves. The 7th Royals minor leaguer on the team is pitcher Federico Castaneda.

Another former Bees pitcher, Danny Gutierrez ('07-'08), has thrown three scoreless innings for Surprise so far. Gutierrez was traded to the Rangers organization last month after spending most of the season in Wilmington.

The Surprise Rafters are made up of players from the Royals, Cardinals, Rangers, Mets, and Yankees organizations. Each team plays 32 regular season games ending November 19th. To follow the daily action of the Arizona Fall League, lot onto http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/winterleagues/.
