Moose Assistant Berry resigns
September 4, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose, in conjunction with the Vancouver Canucks, today announced Assistant Coach Brad Berry has resigned from his position for personal and family reasons.
Berry, 43, joined the Moose back on July 31, 2006 and has spent the past two seasons behind the bench with Head Coach Scott Arniel in charge of the defensive corps. The Bashaw, AB native has been instrumental in the development of young prospects such as Alex Edler who spent his rookie pro season under the tutelage of Berry before bursting on the NHL scene and being named to the NHL YoungStars Game as part of the NHL All-Star festivities in Atlanta in 2008. Berry also worked closely with players like Nathan McIver who appeared in 17 NHL games with Vancouver for the first-time in his career last season. During his time with the Moose, the team compiled a record of 91-50-10-9 and set new franchise records for the lowest goals allowed in a season in each of the past two years (2006-07 & 2007-08). Berry also coached the penalty kill which led the AHL in 2006-07, almost setting a new league mark for penalty killing success at 89.7 per cent.
Previous to joining the Moose, Berry was an assistant coach with the IHL's Michigan K-Wings during the 1999-2000 season. He then went on to become a coach for six seasons with the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux, including his final two seasons as Associate Head Coach. In that time, UND advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four National Championships three times (2001, 2005, 2006), captured two WCHA Division Titles, and one WCHA Playoff title.
After graduating from the University of North Dakota and three seasons with the Fighting Sioux, Berry played 241 games in the National Hockey League with the Winnipeg Jets, Minnesota North Stars, and Dallas Stars from 1986-1994. In that time, he collected four goals and 28 assists for 32 points and 323 penalty minutes. He also played in 13 Stanley Cup playoff games where he collected an assist and 16 penalty minutes.
Berry also appeared in 404 games in the International Hockey League with Kalamazoo and Michigan from 1991 until his retirement following the 1999 season. He scored 23 goals and 77 assists for 100 points and 538 penalty minutes in the IHL. He also played in 21 Turner Cup playoff games where he scored two goals and five assists for seven points and 22 penalty minutes. In the American Hockey League, Berry played in 86 games with the Moncton Hawks where he scored five goals and 28 assists for 33 points and 111 penalty minutes.
Berry was originally drafted by the Winnipeg Jets with their second round choice, 29th overall, in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft.
