FC Montreal News Release
MONTREAL - The Montreal Impact tied 1-1 against FC Montreal in a preseason friendly, between the club's two teams Saturday morning, at Olympic Stadium. The game was divided into four 30 minute periods.
The first team opened the scoring in the 80th minute. After a cross from the right flank by Johan Venegas, Romario Williams controlled the ball in the box before scoring the first goal of the game.
FC Montreal equalized in the 92nd minute. Michael Bilak passed to Simon Lemire doing an overlap on the right. Lemire crossed the ball to the second post for Jimmy-Shammar Sanon, who scored on a volley.
In the 20th minute, Marco Donadel took a free kick on the left side of the opposing box. His curling shot was turned away by Maxime Crépeau, who dove to his left.
In the 69th minute, Romario Williams dribbled the ball onto the left side and passed the ball through to Anthony Jackson-Hamel, who ended his run up alone against goalkeeper David Paulmin, but his shot missed the net by a few inches.
"It was a good game. FC Montreal worked and pushed hard and gave us a good opposition today and that's what I wanted," said Impact head coach Mauro Biello. "There were good things on both sides. We worked on the transition this week and I wanted to see the players' reaction when they lose the ball."
"We work hard every day to have quality and to be coherent on the field, so we were not surprised," said FC Montreal head coach Philippe Eullaffroy. "Against a team who doesn't close the play and who also wants to put in place its own identity and style of play; it offers interesting games to watch. It's a better team so it's interesting to see our qualities and weaknesses against a team like this one."
The game allowed more players the opportunity to get more playing time.
The Montreal Impact will fly to Florida Monday and play its next preseason game against New York City FC on Wednesday, at 7pm, at the Al Lang Stadium.
