Monterey Bay FC News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Monterey Bay F.C. (1-0-2, 5 points) travels to Texas for a marquee matchup with San Antonio FC (1-0-2, 5 points) at 5:30 p.m. PT on Saturday at Toyota Field in Week 4 of the 2024 USL Championship regular season. Live streaming of the match will be available on ESPN+.
In a tough battle at home against Eastern Conference expansion side Rhode Island FC, Monterey Bay F.C. rallied back from a goal down on two occasions in the match to earn a point on the night. Monterey Bay even looked to have scored a game-winning third goal late on, but it was called back for offside, leaving the Union to settle for a draw as it extended its unbeaten run to start the campaign. Carlos Guzmán scored his first goal for the Crisp-and-Kelp in the first half, followed by Tristan Trager adding his second goal of the season to draw the match level for good in the 72nd minute. Walmer Martínez and Mobi Fehr recorded their first assists of the season as well, adding to the collective success of the early season for Monterey Bay so far.
San Antonio FC comes into the weekend fresh off of a 2-0 shutout win over Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at Toyota Field. Coming off of two draws to start the season, the win was the Texas club's first of the year. Scoreless through 75 minutes, San Antonio FC broke through with a goal from Lucas Silva before putting a stamp on the night with a Hugo Mbongue goal in the 90+1 minute. With the dust settled from the weekend, San Antonio and Monterey Bay now sit in third and fourth place respectively (tied for first in the conference on points), each with 5 points.
Looking ahead to Saturday, Monterey Bay will aim to secure its first win over San Antonio FC in the Club's young history, having gone 0-3-1 in the first four meetings between the sides. The most recent contest between the two Western Conference clubs took place last August at Toyota Field in San Antonio, with the Crisp-and-Kelp earning its first-ever result against the Texas side in a scoreless draw.
