THIS WEEK IN AFL PLAYOFF HISTORY

----------------------------------

August 7, 1992: In the greatest single-game performance in the six-year history of the league, Detroit OS GEORGE LAFRANCE accounted for 310 yards of total offense in the Drive's 48-23 playoff win over the Sacramento Attack. LaFrance set up two first half scores on long returns and took the open kickoff of the second half for a playoff-record 57 yards. His 130 yards receiving also set a new playoff record mark (at the time).

August 7, 1992: SHAQUILLE O'NEAL of the NBA's Orlando Magic (now of L.A. Lakers stardom) presides over the coin toss of the Predators 50-12 playoff win over the Cleveland Thunderbolts.

August 8, 1998: New Jersey's RICKEY FOGGIE throws for postseason records of 446 yards and nine touchdowns as the Red Dogs beat the Firebirds, 66-59, to advance to the second round. (NOTE: In the 2002 quarterfinals, Arizona's SHERDRICK BONNER matched Foggie's record with nine scoring strikes in the Rattlers' win against Carolina.)

August 11, 1989: In an outstanding playoff performance, Detroit FB/LB LYNN BRADFORD breaks the single-game record for most yards gained with 91 on 12 carries (three touchdowns). This postseason record still stands today.

August 11, 1990: ArenaBowl IV. Detroit 51, Dallas 27. The Drive cruise to victory before 19,875 fans at Joe Louis Arena. It was the third straight title for the Drive, in their third season in the league.

August 12, 1995: Albany 51, St. Louis 49. The Firebirds score an AFL playoff record with 44 second-half points to erase a 31-7 Stampede lead. Albany scores on all six of their second-half possessions and a fumble return to set up a 17-yard TREY WEIR field goal on the game's last play for the win.
