
Monarchs Acquire Barbara Farris In Trade With Phoenix

SACRAMENTO, CALIF., March 20, 2009 - The Sacramento Monarchs announced today they acquired center/forward Barbara Farris from the Phoenix Mercury in exchange for guard A'Quonesia Franklin and forward Kim Smith.
"We're excited to add Farris to our roster," said Sacramento Monarchs General Manager John Whisenant. "She is a good, tough, experienced post player that can come in and help lead our young players. Also, having won a WNBA Championship with the Detroit Shock, she knows what it takes to help elevate the team to the highest level of play."
A nine-year WNBA veteran, Farris played six seasons in Detroit and two seasons in New York before signing with Phoenix in 2008. This past season, she played all 34 games with the Mercury averaging 16.3 minutes, 3.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 0.2 assists, 0.6 steals and 0.1 blocks per game. For her career, Farris has appeared in 267 games with 71 starts and is averaging 16.4 minutes, 4.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 0.6 assists, 0.4 steals and 0.1 blocks per game. She also won a WNBA Championship as a member of the Detroit Shock in 2003.
Phoenix gains Franklin, drafted by Sacramento in the third round (38th overall) of the 2008 WNBA Draft. In her lone season with the Monarchs, Franklin appeared in all 34 games averaging 10.3 minutes, 1.6 points, 1.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 0.5 steals per game. She also played all three WNBA Playoff games with the team, averaging 6.2 minutes, 0.7 points, 0.3 rebounds, 0.3 assists and 0.3 steals per game.
Also headed to the Mercury is Smith, who was originally selected by the Monarchs in the first round (13th overall) of the 2006 WNBA Draft. Through her three seasons with Sacramento, Smith appeared in 55 games and averaged 8.4 minutes, 1.9 points, 1.0 rebounds, 0.5 assists and 0.3 steals per game.
