Mohawks Blank Dragons, Win Fourth Straight

The Amsterdam Mohawks picked up their fourth straight win, defeating the Glens Falls Dragons 9-0 Thursday night at Shuttleworth Park. With the shutout, the Mohawks have now outscored the Dragons 19-0 in the last 18 innings played between the two teams.

Tyler Ungerland (St. Rose) led the Mohawks offensively, going 3-for-3 with three singles, a walk, a run scored, and three RBIs. On the mound, Cameron Enck (Maryland), Johnny Malatesta (NJIT) and Ben Rhodes (Siena) combined to pitch nine scoreless innings, allowed three hits, walked one, and struck out seven.

Amsterdam started the scoring in the bottom of the second. Tristen Carranza (New Mexico State) led off with a single to left and advanced to second on a passed ball. After Joe Genord (South Florida) worked a walk, Tyler Ratliff (Marshall) singled to load the bases. Dan Maynard (Maryland) walked to bring home Carranza with one out. Two batters later, Ungerland singled to drive home both Genord and Ratliff. Maynard would score on another passed ball to make it 4-0 Mohawks.

In the bottom of the fourth, Maynard singled with one out and advanced to second on a fielding error by the left fielder. After advancing on an ensuing groundout, Maynard scored on another passed ball, making it 5-0 Amsterdam.

The Mohawks struck for four more in the bottom of the sixth. Kyle Sacks (UAlbany) led off with a single and advanced around the bases on three wild pitches to ensuing batters. Maynard, who followed Sacks with a walk, scored on another Ungerland single two batters later. Andrew Rouse (Marist) took a 1-0 fastball over the left field wall for the two-run home run, the first hit at Shuttleworth Park this season, making it 9-0.

The win on the hill went to Enck, who improved to 1-0 after pitching five scoreless innings, in which he allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out three. The loss went to Drue Brooks (Felician), dropping him to 0-2. Brooks went five innings, allowed six hits, five runs (four earned), walked five, and struck out two.

The Mohawks (4-3) and Dragons (1-6) meet again tomorrow night at Shuttleworth Park at 6:35 p.m. Amsterdam will look to make it five straight wins, while Glens Falls aims to end a four game skid.
