NEW YORK RED BULLS vs. COLUMBUS CREW - MSG, ONN

Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, N.J. - 7:30 p.m.

Complete game notes: http://web.mlsnet.com/pdf/mls/2006/gameguides/09/916nyclb.pdf

Two teams currently on the outside looking in at the MLS Cup Playoffs face off in a must-win game if either wants to reach the postseason. The New York Red Bulls are currently four points behind fourth-place Kansas City for the last playoff spot - but they have two games in hand over the team closest to them in the Eastern Conference table. The Columbus Crew sit a further three points behind the Red Bulls - a loss on Saturday would leave them seven points in back of the Wizards with just four games remaining for both.

CHICAGO FIRE vs D.C. UNITED - ESPN2

TOYOTA PARK, Bridgeview, Ill. - 4:00 p.m.

Complete game preview: http://web.mlsnet.com/news/mls_news.jsp?ymd=20060915&content_id=72737&vkey=news_mls&fext=.jsp

Barely a week removed from a fractious U.S. Open Cup semifinal, the Chicago Fire again play host to D.C. United, with the game having a little less impact than it might have a few days ago. D.C. United has already clinched home-field for the Eastern Conference Semifinals, and with a win or draw on Sunday, would guarantee the road to MLS Cup 2006 would go through RFK Stadium. The Fire had a chance to clinch a playoff spot with two games this weekend; while they can no longer do that with a victory on Sunday, they are still nine points clear of fifth-place New York, with the Red Bulls still having six games to play (five for Chicago).

REFEREE: Terry Vaughn. SAR (bench): Emiliano Monje; JAR (opposite): Anthony Vasoli; 4th: Marcel Yonan

MLS Career: 68 games; FC/gm: 30.7; Y/gm: 3.9; R: 20; pens: 21

MLS 2006: 8 games; FC/gm: 28.4 (avg: 28.8); Y/gm: 4.3 (avg: 3.68); R: 1 (MLS: 31); pens: 3 (MLS: 34)

Games involving Fire: P16 W8 L4 T4; FC/gm: 30.7; Y/gm: 4.1; R: 6; pens: 5

Games involving United: P11 W5 L2 T4; FC/gm: 30.9; Y/gm: 4.1; R: 4; pens: 3

INJURY REPORT:

CHICAGO FIRE - OUT: FW Chad Barrett (R fifth metatarsal fracture), MF Craig Capano (L knee derangement), DF Jeff Curtin (R adductor strain); DF Jared Montz (L adductor strain); MF Ivan Guerrero (L hamstring strain); MF John Thorrington (R hamstring strain); QUESTIONABLE: GK Zach Thornton (R quadriceps strain)

D.C. UNITED - OUT: MF Domenic Mediate (broken distal fibula); DF John Wilson (knee surgery); PROBABLE: FW Alecko Eskandarian (hamstring tendonitis)

SUSPENDED: DC: Ben Olsen (five cautions; through Sept. 17)

WARNINGS:

SUSPENDED NEXT YELLOW CARD: CHI: Dasan Robinson, Gonzalo Segares ... DC: Brian Carroll, Josh Gros

SUSPENDED AFTER TWO YELLOW CARDS: CHI: Chris Armas, C.J. Brown, Calen Carr, Nate Jaqua ... DC: Bobby Boswell, Christian Gomez

INTERNATIONAL ABSENCES: none

HEAD-TO-HEAD

ALL-TIME (26 meetings): Fire 10 wins (0 shootout), 41 goals ... United 11 wins (0 shootout), 42 goals ... 5 draws

AT CHICAGO (13 meetings): Fire 7 wins (0 shootout), 26 goals ... United 3 wins (0 shootout), 18 goals ... 3 draws

-- This is the third of four meetings, the second at Toyota Park, between the clubs who have had a pitched rivalry since the Fire's entrance into the league in 1998. They next meet in the season finale, Oct. 15 on East Capitol Street.

-- United won two of the four league meetings a year ago in a goal-filled season series, with the Fire taking one with one draw. The teams then met in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals where there were again goals aplenty - but only for the Fire, winning 4-0 on aggregate after a 4-0 second-leg win in the nation's capital, the heaviest playoff home defeat for United.

-- In the first 24 all-time regular season meetings between the clubs, they'd exactly halved everything. Each team had won 10 times with four draws, each scoring 40 goals.

-- But in three MLS Cup Playoffs series between the clubs, United have never defeated the Fire in five matches. They had lost the first three (including a 2-0 loss in the 1998 MLS Cup Final) before gaining a draw in the first leg of last year's quarterfinal series.
