
MLS Disciplinary Committee Fines and Suspends Colorado Rapids Midfielder Pablo Mastroeni

NEW YORK (Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009) - The Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee today fined Colorado Rapids midfielder Pablo Mastroeni $1,250 and suspended him two games for endangering the safety of an opponent. The incident occurred in the 63rd minute of the Rapids match versus the Houston Dynamo on Aug. 30.
Mastroeni was involved in the incident with Dynamo defender Andrew Hainault and received a yellow card. Hainault suffered an injury as a result of the play and upon further review, the Disciplinary Committee deemed Mastroeni's actions reckless and egregious, thus constituting additional fine and suspension. Mastroeni was suspended one game and fined $250 for accumulation of five yellow cards. The additional two-game suspension and $1,250 fine brings the total to three games and $1,500. Mastroeni will serve the suspension beginning with Rapids home game versus Toronto FC on Saturday, Sept. 5. He will also be suspended when the Rapids travel to face Toronto FC on Saturday, Sept. 12 and travel to face San Jose on Friday, Sept. 18.
As one of the League's official Charities of Choice, the US Soccer Foundation is the recipient of all player fines at the end of each season. Those fines are added to the Foundation's Annual Grants Pool from which the Board of Directors awards grants to soccer clubs and organizations that serve economically disadvantaged children in urban areas.
