
Missouri Takes Game One against Sundogs, 5-3

Independence, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks took Game One in the opening round of the 2014 Central Hockey League Playoffs against the Arizona Sundogs Friday night falling 5-3 at the Independence Event Center. Despite coming out strong in the third the Sundogs were unable to rally back from a four goal deficit after the first two periods.
The opening frame was chippy as tempers began to flare. 6:15 into the period Dave Pszenyczny tallied a shorthanded goal when Andrew Courtney was called for slashing. Missouri posted two more goals giving them a three goal lead. Michael Trebish was assessed a roughing minor after colliding with a Maverick's player at center ice giving Missouri the man-advantage they needed to score their second goal. Mike Ramsay came in with the goal from Matt Stephenson and Eric Castonguay. A minute later a scrum broke out in front of the Mavericks net and Matt Forney received an interference call and David Rutherford was called for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The Mavericks continued their offensive dominance, scoring two unanswered goals in the second. Sebastien Thinel scored three minutes into the period and four minutes later Courtney posted their fifth goal giving them a four goal advantage after 40 minutes of play. Arizona came out in the third looking to battle back, posting two goals closing their deficit. Rutherford scored for Arizona with the assist going to Coccimiglio 4:57 into the third and 1:16 later Shawn Limpright tallied a power play goal from Kevin Baker and Mark Isherwood. Missouri received a penalty shot which was unsuccessful being denied by Andrew Engelage keeping the score at 5-3.
Engelage took the loss for the Sundogs making 23 saves. Arizona outshot Missouri 32-29. The Sundogs were 1-5 on the power play and the Mavericks were 2-4. Both teams meet again Sunday at the Independence Event Center for Game 2 in round one of the 2014 CHL Playoffs.
