Mississippi to begin play in 2004

Published on July 20, 2004 under American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release

Indianapolis, IN. Joe Newman, ABA Co-founder, today announced that the Mississippi team originally scheduled to begin play in 2005 has decided to move up the calendar and begin play in 2004.

According to Newman, "We've been working with this group for quite sometime and felt that this would be a perfect addition to our Southeast division next year. However, as the word spread about the Mississippi team, their phones and our phones have "rung off the hook" asking why not this year. So, we asked the same thing - why not this year? If anyone can put together a competitive organization and team, it's well-known Coach Andy Stoglin."

The team will be owned by It Takes a Village Sports Enterprises, a Jackson-based sports and entertainment company. Andy Stoglin, a college coach for over 30 years, will serve as General Manager/Coach. Following coaching stints at Cal Poly, San Diego State, Southern University at Baton Rouge, Arkansas with Nolan Richardson, and 15 years as Head Coach of Jackson State (recently retired), Coach Stoglin indicated he is looking forward to the challenge at the professional level.

Stoglin added, "We looked at several cities in Mississippi to locate the team and have selected Greenville. While not a big city by any means, it is easy accessible and has an extraordinary amount of tourist traffic and visitors. We'll pack the venue with an up-tempo, exciting, fast team - and ticket prices, as in all ABA cities, will be very affordable.. And we know that we can put together a very competitive team. Personally, this is very exciting for me."
